SCALE AND PROPORTION

It is a proportional relationship between two sets of dimensions.

Scale and proportion play very important roles for architecture.

It refers to how we perceive or judge the size of something compared to a reference standard or to the size of something else. Therefore we always compare one thing to another.

scale also refers to the mathematical relationship between an object and a measurable quantity (the scale referent). In an architectural drawing, we use a scale to specify the ratio that determines the relationship between the drawing and the actual building.

Proportion refers to the proper and harmonious relation of one part to another or to the whoe, in terms of: MAGNITUDE(scale), QUANTITY, DEGREE.

Proportions throughout history:

GOLDEN SECTION (a ratio defined number by the number Phi 1.618...)

REGULATING LINES (

CLASSICAL ORDERS

RENAISSANCE THEORIES

MODULOR (is based on golden section and human proportions, average human height 183cm)

ANTHROPOMETRY (refers to the size and proportions of the human body, inch, foot, yard)

It can be VISUAL SCALE or HUMAN SCALE

VISUAL SCALE:

refers not to the dimensions of things, but rather to how small or large something appears to be in relationship to its normal size.

HUMAN SCALE:

refers to the size of a form when compared with or own human size. Human scale in architecture is based on the dimensions and proportions of the human body.

VISUAL WEIGHT: When visual weight is equally distributed to either side of a felt or implied center of gravity, we feel that the composition is balanced.

SYMMETRICAL BALANCE: A design in which the two halves of a composition on either side of an imaginary central vertical axis correspond to another in size, shape and placement.

Large, dark, textured, complex; show heavy in visual.
